Ganjam’s Infrastructure Leap: The ₹290 Crore Plan for Aska

Aska, a key town in Ganjam district, is set for a major infrastructure boost after the central government approved three road and bridge projects worth around ₹290 crore.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cleared the construction of a bypass connecting National Highways NH-157 and NH-59 at an estimated cost of ₹159.5 crore. The plan also includes high-level bridges over the Rushikulya and Badanadi rivers, along with the Tipisara nullah, with an additional outlay of ₹126.5 crore.

State government sources said the Works Department has granted administrative approval for the bridge components. The 6.72-km bypass will be developed as a two-lane road with two flyovers and one underpass, aimed at diverting traffic away from Aska town. About ₹37.43 crore has been allocated for land acquisition.

The bridge projects will be executed under the Setu Bandhan scheme of the Central Road Infrastructure Fund for 2025–26.

Separately, the Centre has sanctioned ₹66.35 lakh for a feasibility study and detailed project report (DPR) for a proposed four-lane greenfield road between Berhampur and Aska. The final cost of the 33-km stretch will be determined after completion of the DPR.

Local representatives have welcomed the move, noting that the projects are expected to ease congestion, mitigate flood risks, and enhance regional connectivity. The proposed Berhampur–Aska greenfield road is also likely to reduce travel distance between the two towns.
